KEY LARGO FISHING REPORT
6/28/10 Key largo Reef and Backcountry Fishing
Night fishing on the edge of the reef line is on big time. Did 3 trips last week when it was calm and slammed nice yellow tails and mangrove snapper up to 5 lbs. This time of year it was a welcomed change to beat the heat and night fish. The fishing was great, limits every time out with nice fish. A good trick is to keep the lights to a minimum and the mangrove snapper got 10 feet off the boat, cast beyond them and start your free line and the yellowtails were not much farther back. This makes for some fast fishing and with 10 lbs test it was alot of fun, everyone had a super time.
This week the wind was up so back we went for the shallows. Fishing in the backcountry east of Flamingo trout, jacks and lady fish made for a fast bite. Got over 100 fish on artificials with trout up and over the 20'' mark. Limits where easy to get if the anglers wanted them. Heard that some snook are being found around the cape and some fish in the Flamingo area. After a rough winter hopefully the snook will soon find there way back to the spots in the eastern bay. This is the first I heard this year of snook in the backcountry, still closed till Sept.Tarpon closer to home in local cuts and creeks, fishing at dusk into the night is the way to go also some snook in the deeper water mixed in with the tarpon. Summer is here, fishing after dark is not only productive but beats the heat as well.
Tight lines Capt. Bob.......................
